How to use Create a Star-shaped GIF
- 1. Add your GIF. Drop an animated or static .gif file into the input pane. Each frame gets masked using the same star shape, keeping the animation's timing unchanged.
- 2. Set Star points. Choose how many points the star has with Star points. Five points gives the familiar classic star, while more points create a denser, spikier burst shape.
- 3. Set Inner radius. Drag the Inner radius slider to control how deep the notches between points cut in. A smaller inner radius makes sharper, thinner points.
- 4. Download the star GIF. Save the resulting .gif file. Everything outside the star shape becomes transparent, leaving the animation visible only through the star cutout.
When to use Create a Star-shaped GIF
Create a Star-shaped GIF masks every frame of an animated GIF into a star outline, making everything outside that shape transparent. It is for turning a rectangular animation into a decorative badge or highlight shape instead.
- Making an achievement badge animation. A game or app wants an animated star-shaped badge to celebrate a level-up or milestone, built from a shimmering GIF cropped to the star outline.
- Highlighting a featured product. An online store wants a small animated star burst over a featured item, cropped from an existing shimmer or sparkle GIF.
- Designing a review-rating animation. A five-star rating widget wants one of its stars to animate on hover, and this crops the underlying GIF to exactly that shape first.

About the Create a Star-shaped GIF tool
Create a Star-shaped GIF runs as plain JavaScript in your browser tab, with no server behind it. Mask each frame of a GIF into a star, making the rest transparent. Whatever you put in stays on your device from start to finish.
The tool is part of EditSafely's GIF Tools section, 110 single-purpose utilities built around the same idea: open the page, get the result, keep your data to yourself.
You can shape the output with 2 settings, including Star points and Inner radius (%), and the result refreshes the moment you change one. The finished file is put together in browser memory and saved with the Download button, so it never touches a server on the way to your disk. A worked example further down the page shows exactly what the tool produces for a real input.
That local-first design has practical benefits beyond privacy. The tool keeps working on a flaky connection once the page has loaded, results are instant because nothing round-trips to a server, and it is safe to use with confidential material.
