How to use Make PNG Transparent

  1. 1. Upload the PNG. Add the image containing the color you want removed. It loads into the preview so you can pick the exact pixel color to target.
  2. 2. Pick the color and tolerance. Use Color to make transparent to select the shade to remove, such as a flat white background, and set Color tolerance (%) to control how close a pixel's color has to be to count as a match.
  3. 3. Download the transparent PNG. Save the result once every matching pixel has been turned fully transparent. Colors outside your tolerance range keep their original opacity untouched.

When to use Make PNG Transparent

Make PNG Transparent converts a specific color in an image into zero-alpha transparency, effectively knocking out a flat background or fill without a manual selection tool. Choose it whenever an image has one dominant solid color that needs to disappear.

  • Knocking out a solid-color logo background. An icon.png was exported with a flat white fill instead of real transparency. Setting the color to #ffffff and a small tolerance turns that white into a clean transparent background.
  • Removing a green screen backdrop. A rendered character sprite sits on a flat green backdrop from a game engine export. Targeting that specific green and raising the tolerance slightly removes anti-aliased fringe pixels along with it.
  • Cleaning up a scanned line drawing. A scanned sketch has a uniform off-white paper color that should be transparent instead of opaque. Selecting that paper tone and a moderate tolerance clears it while keeping the ink lines intact.

Examples

Knock out white

Input

icon.png + color #ffffff

Output

icon.png with every white pixel turned fully transparent

About the Make PNG Transparent tool

Make PNG Transparent is a free online tool that works entirely inside your web browser. Select a specific hex color value and convert it into zero-alpha transparency. Because the processing happens on your own device, nothing you enter is uploaded, logged or stored anywhere.

This page is one of 108 PNG utilities on EditSafely. Each one does a single job well, and all of them follow the same rule: your input stays on your machine.

You can shape the output with 2 settings, including Color to make transparent and Color tolerance (%), and the result refreshes the moment you change one. The finished file is put together in browser memory and saved with the Download button, so it never touches a server on the way to your disk. A worked example further down the page shows exactly what the tool produces for a real input.

Because nothing leaves your device, the tool is suitable for sensitive content such as internal documents, credentials or customer data. It also responds instantly, since every keystroke is handled on your own machine rather than by a remote API.
