How to use Sort Date Intervals

  1. 1. Paste your date ranges. Paste one date range per line into the input pane, such as '2026-01-01 to 2026-01-05', in whatever order you collected them.
  2. 2. Choose what to sort by. Pick Start date to order ranges by when they begin, or Length (days) to order them by how long each range runs, from shortest to longest or the reverse.
  3. 3. Pick the order and copy the result. Choose Ascending or Descending, then copy the sorted list. Switching between Start date and Length reorders the ranges by a completely different criterion.

When to use Sort Date Intervals

Sort Date Intervals orders a list of date ranges either by when each one starts or by how long it runs, which is a sort a plain date sorter cannot do. It is for lists of ranges rather than single dates.

  • Ordering project phases chronologically for a roadmap. A project's phases were listed in the order they were planned, not the order they'll actually run. Sort by Start date to get the roadmap in true chronological sequence.
  • Finding the longest-running task in a project plan. You want to know which phase in a plan takes the most calendar time to identify the critical path. Sort by Length descending and read the top range.
  • Prioritizing short-term bookings ahead of long-term ones. A rental system wants short bookings displayed first so quick turnovers are easy to spot. Sort by Length ascending to surface the shortest reservations at the top.
  • Auditing overlapping date ranges in a contract schedule. Before checking a set of contract terms for overlaps, it helps to first view them sorted by start date so adjacent ranges are easy to compare by eye.

About the Sort Date Intervals tool

Sort Date Intervals is a free online tool that works entirely inside your web browser. Sort calendar-date ranges by their start or by their length. Because the processing happens on your own device, nothing you enter is uploaded, logged or stored anywhere.

This page is one of 90 Time utilities on EditSafely. Each one does a single job well, and all of them follow the same rule: your input stays on your machine.

You can shape the output with 2 settings, including Sort by and Order, and the result refreshes the moment you change one. A worked example further down the page shows exactly what the tool produces for a real input.

Because nothing leaves your device, the tool is suitable for sensitive content such as internal documents, credentials or customer data. It also responds instantly, since every keystroke is handled on your own machine rather than by a remote API.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sort Date Intervals free to use?

Yes, it is completely free. All 2,658 tools on EditSafely work without an account, a subscription or usage limits.

Is it safe to paste sensitive or confidential data?

Everything happens locally. Your browser downloads the tool's code once, then does all the processing itself; nothing you enter is transmitted, stored or logged. You can even go offline after the page loads and it will still work.

How much text can I process at once?

There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your own device rather than on a shared server, the practical ceiling is your machine's memory, which comfortably handles inputs far larger than typical online tools allow.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. The tool works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. There is no account to create, no extension to add and no software to install.

How do I use the result?

The output panel has a one-click copy button, and you can keep refining the input while you work; the result updates in place as you type.
